"Don't Fall Asleep!"
In the small town of Springwood, the Elm Street kids are having nightmares. They don't understand who is doing it, or why it's happening, but someone is brutally stalking them in their dreams. One by one, they begin to die unexpected deaths, victims of their own nightmares.
Tina Gray is scared to death. She became so afraid of the unknown, that she asked her friends Nancy Thompson and Glen Lantz to stay with her for a sleepover because her mother ran off to Las Vegas with her new boyfriend. Rod Lane, the local bully and Tina's boyfriend, also shows up, jokingly stating that him and Tina get "her mom's bed" and that Nancy and Glen can have the rest.
That night, after Tina and Rod make love, Tina is brutally stalked and murdered in her dream by this unknown assailant. Rod awoke, shocked to see this "invisible" killer slashing up his girlfriend right before his eyes.
Rod flees, and Nancy and Glen find Tina dead in her room. The whole town is caught in an uproar as another one of its children are dead.
The next day, Rod confronts Nancy on her way to school, and is arrested by police lieutenant Donald Thompson, Nancy's father.
Meanwhile, the nightmares continued in school for Nancy, who herself barely escapes the clutches of the killer by burning her arm on a scalding hot pipe in the stalker's boiler room. When she wakes up, the burn was clearly visible on her arm.
Nancy then tries to tell Glen, her mother, and anyone else who will listen that the man who is after her wears a "dirty red and green sweater" and is "badly burned."
Unfortunately, no one seems to believe her, so she goes to tell Rod about it. However, Rod falls asleep, and is quickly dispatched by the killer, who uses his bedsheet to hang him.
Nancy then again tries to tell both of her parents who the killer is, and her mother takes her to get help at a dream clinic. At the clinic, Nancy is again attacked by the monster, but this time, when she is brought out of the dream, she is holding the killer's floppy hat, complete with his name in it- Fred Krueger.
Shocked at the outcome, Mrs. Thompson installs prison bars in front of all the windows of her house for security. She then explains to Nancy that Fred Krueger was a child molester who killed most of the kids of the block, kids they all knew. When they finally caught him, someone forgot to sign the search warrant, and Krueger was freed on a technicality. Enraged, the parents of Elm Street hunted down Krueger into an abandoned factory where he used to work. They poured gasoline all around, and torched the factory and everything in it- including Krueger. She tries to assure Nancy that Krueger is dead, and she finds it impossible that Krueger can get to them in their dreams.
Furious, Nancy is confined to her bedroom, while Fred Krueger, still loose in the dream world, goes after Glen and horribly kills him in a fountain of his own blood.
Heartbroken and backed into a corner, Nancy decides its time to face her fear, so she devises a plan to eliminate Krueger once and for all.
Falling asleep and entering the dream world, Nancy booby traps the house and gives herself ten minutes to carry out the plan. Would her plan work, or would Nancy be lost forever in the dream world?
